What is MCP, the plug that connects AI to your apps?
A short learning video. A renovation company owner and a software engineer talk it through, with pictures and quiet music.
What this video shows
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is one standard way to connect an AI app to your other apps, like one plug that fits everywhere. An app builds one MCP connector, and any AI app that speaks MCP can use it, with your OK.
Nora asks her AI which jobs next week still need tiles, and it cannot see her files: her jobs, calendar and the supplier’s shop are all outside it. Sam shows the problem MCP solves: before, every AI app needed a special connection to every other app; with MCP, each side builds one plug. Its makers call it a USB-C port for AI apps. It is open: Anthropic made it public in late 2024, OpenAI, Google and Microsoft support it, and it now belongs to an open foundation.
Then how it works: you connect an app and choose what it may do; the AI app asks the connector what it can do and gets a short menu; the AI picks the right item and the connector runs it in the real app; the answer comes back. And the safety rules: your OK before a tool runs, only trusted connectors, and only what each one needs. Connecting AI to the apps a business already uses is a big part of what I build.
Questions people ask
Is MCP the same as an API?
No. An API is one app’s own door. MCP is a shared standard way for AI apps to use many such doors through connectors. An agent can also use software through the screen, like a person: see the video “Can AI use my computer like a person?”
Is MCP safe?
It can be. The rules say the AI app must get your OK before it uses a tool. Use only trusted connectors and give each one only what it needs.
Do I need to build a connector?
Often not. There are more than ten thousand public ones, and many apps have an official one.

Every spoken line, in order. Two voices: Nora, who runs a renovation company, and Sam, a software engineer. Quiet music plays under the voices.
0:03 Nora: What is MCP, the plug that connects AI to your apps?
0:08 Sam: MCP is one standard way to connect an AI app to your other apps. Like one plug that fits everywhere.
Sam: An app builds one MCP connector. Then any AI app that speaks MCP can use it, with your OK.
0:24 Nora: I asked my AI: which jobs next week still need tiles?
Nora: It said it cannot see my files.
0:31 Sam: Right. The AI is smart, but it sits in a closed box.
Sam: Your jobs, your calendar and the supplier’s shop are all outside it.
0:40 Sam: Before MCP, every AI app needed a special connection to every other app.
Sam: Three AI apps and four business apps? Twelve connections.
Sam: With MCP, each side builds one plug. Seven, not twelve.
0:56 Sam: Think of USB-C: one plug for your phone, your laptop and your screen.
Sam: MCP’s makers call it exactly that: a USB-C port for AI apps.
1:07 Sam: It is open. Anthropic made it public in late 2024, and OpenAI, Google and Microsoft support it now.
Sam: It belongs to an open foundation, not to one company.
1:21 Sam: Here is how it works. First, you connect your calendar to your AI app.
Sam: You log in, and you choose what it may do.
1:30 Sam: The AI app asks the connector: what can you do? It gets a short menu back.
Sam: You ask your question. The AI picks the right item, and the connector runs it in the real app.
Sam: And the answer comes back to your chat.
1:45 Nora: So now I ask: which jobs next week still need tiles?
Sam: It checks the job sheet, the calendar and the supplier’s shop, through three connectors.
Nora: Two jobs. And the tiles for one are in stock.
1:58 Nora: Can it order the tiles too?
Sam: If you allow it. The MCP rules say the AI app must get your OK before it uses a tool.
2:07 Sam: Safety rule one: use only connectors you trust, from the app’s own maker or a verified list.
Sam: A bad connector can hide tricks in what it sends back.
2:18 Sam: Rule two: give each one only what it needs. Read your calendar? Yes. Delete your files? No.
2:24 Sam: And you may not need to build anything. There are already more than ten thousand public MCP connectors.
Sam: Many apps you use have an official one.
2:35 Nora: The AI works with my real apps now. And I still decide what it may touch.
2:40 Sam: MCP is one standard plug, so AI apps can use your other apps, with your OK.
